3.6.2: Year 3 American English Lessons with Maestro Sersea

Hello students. I’m proud of you for completing years 1 and 2 of our American English course.  In order for you to become a strong intermediate American English learner, you need to be able to read, understand, and discuss abridged American English short stories.  In this lesson, throughout Year 3 of your studies, you will read, listen to, and write about popular American English short stories. Please follow the directions below closely.

Words in This Story

frontier – n. a border between two countries

doorstep – n. a step or series of steps leading up to one of the doors that is used to enter or leave a building

lifeless – adj. Having no life

rifle – n. A gun that has a long barrel and that is held against your shoulder when you shoot it

unconscious – adj. not awake especially because of an injury, drug, etc.

      Lesson 3.6.2 Year 3
      American short story.
      ” The boarded Window ”. It was written by Ambrose Bierce.
      This story is told by an unknown man, originally heard the story from his grandfather. Murlock is one of the very few original settlers in the frontier near Cincinatti, who did not like to mover anywhere else for his better life, failed former, who makes a variety of mistakes. He is like fifty years old but he appeared to be seventy years. Murlock was found in his carbine, dead. It is not atime and place for medical examiners and newspapers. I was agreed that he had died from natural cause or should have been told, and should remember. When Murlog built his carbine he was young, strong, and full of hope. Murlog got married with lovely wife, but unfortunately and later on his wife got illness and was badly situation till she died because of no doctor cure her disease. He deep sadness, so hardship,
      and felt so sorry his wife.

  2. One day Morlock found his wife has become ill and then he lost his wife, again with the preparation of his wife burial, he could not make the arrangements of his wife’s burial. After preparing his wife’s body for burial, Morlock falls asleep, but is awakened, by terrible noise, he shoots his rifle and by its light sees panther trying to drag his wife through the window. Isolation, loneliness and failure that effect people in different ways.
    In the quiz of this story, I got 0 %. Sorry for that! Though the story was very interesting but somehow, I could not follow the theme of the story.
