3.12.1: Year 3 American English Lessons with Maestro Sersea

Welcome to Vocabulary Year 3 of American English Lessons with Maestro Sersea. In this lesson we will study American English vocabulary compliments of the VOA Wordbook, a dictionary of over 1,500 highly-used words.  Please focus and do your best so that you can learn and improve your vocabulary, which will help your comprehension and communication skills. Don’t forget to use the comments section below to share your thoughts and what you’ve learned today.

Part 1 Directions:  Listen to the audio and read along the vocabulary words and definitions 2-3 times.  If needed, use the translation feature to translate the vocabulary words and definitions in your primary language.

• dollar – United States money, one hundred cents
• door – an opening for entering or leaving a building or room
• down – from higher to lower; in a low place
• dream – to have a picture or story in the mind during sleep; a picture or story in the mind during sleep; a happy idea about the future
• drink – to take liquid into the body through the mouth
• drive – to control a moving vehicle
• drop – to fall or let fall; to go lower
• drown – to die under water
• drug – anything used as a medicine or in making medicine; a chemical substance used to ease pain or to affect the mind
• dry – not wet; without rain
• during – through the whole time; while (something is happening)
• dust – pieces of matter so small that they can float in the air
• duty – one’s job or responsibility; what one must do because it is right and just

• earn – to be paid in return for work done
• earth – the planet we all live on; the ground or soil
• earthquake – a sudden, violent shaking of the earth’s surface
• ease – to reduce; to make less difficult
• east – the direction from which the sun rises
• easy – not difficult; not hard to do
• eat – to take food into the body through the mouth
• ecology – the scientific study of the environment and links among living and material things
• economy – the system by which money, industry and trade are organized
• edge – the line where something ends or begins
• education – the act of teaching
• effect – the result or change caused by something (“The storm had a serious effect on the economy.”)
• effort – an attempt; the work necessary to do something
