3.11.2: Year 3 American English Lessons with Maestro Sersea

Hello students. I’m proud of you for completing years 1 and 2 of our American English course.  In order for you to become a strong intermediate American English learner, you need to be able to read, understand, and discuss abridged American English short stories.  In this lesson, throughout Year 3 of your studies, you will read, listen to, and write about popular American English short stories. Please follow the directions below closely.

Words in This Story

investment – n. something that you buy with the idea that it will increase in value, usefulness, etc.

ankle– n. the joint where the foot joins the leg

stylish– adj. following the popular style; fashionable

oyster– n. a type of shellfish that has a rough shell with two parts and that is eaten both cooked and raw

chop– n. a small piece of meat that usually includes a bone from an animal’s side

sensation– n. a particular feeling or effect that your body experiences

lace– n. a very thin and light cloth made with patterns of holes

    Popular American English Short Stories.
    ” A Pair of Silk-stocking’ ‘by Kate Chopen.
    The story revolves around the character of Mrs. Sommer, married woman and has children. It seems that she is single parents and not very rich. when she is shocked to find she has fifteen dollars to spare. She begins to think spending them. Her ideas go instantly to her children. They ought to have new clothes, as she couldn’t afford to buy them. While her plans are wise and selfness, her unconscious has different ideas. Her feet take her to a department store, where she delights the feel of some silk stocking, she purchases the stocking and keep walking through the shop, realizing that her new stocking would not look proper along with her old shoes, she must buy some new ones… Read more

  2. After shopping for shoes, she buys a pair of new gloves. After this she decides she needs to eat lunch and enters to a restaurant, she finally ends up with several course meal together with dessert, vine, and coffee. Having a tasty meal Mrs., Sommer feels happy and pleased, more than she has in a long time. Then a flyer of theatre catches her eye, and she decides with her left the money to enjoy herself watching movie. She enters to theater hall to watch a film, where she shares chocolate with fellow viewers member, when the movie is over, she gets on the train to go home, thinking that the mind initially tries to act in a selfless way, but one’s subconscious gets carried away and places desire over duty, which ultimately results in regrets and guilt.

Then, she went to a nice restaurant and food, a cup of coffee.
    She met theater advertising and then I went back to wait at cable car.
