3.3.1: Year 3 American English Lessons with Maestro Sersea

Welcome to Vocabulary Year 3 of American English Lessons with Maestro Sersea. In this lesson we will study American English vocabulary compliments of the VOA Wordbook, a dictionary of over 1,500 highly-used words.  Please focus and do your best so that you can learn and improve your vocabulary, which will help your comprehension and communication skills. Don’t forget to use the comments section below to share your thoughts and what you’ve learned today.

Part 1 Directions:  Listen to the audio and read along the vocabulary words and definitions 2-3 times.  If needed, use the translation feature to translate the vocabulary words and definitions in your primary language.

  • as – equally (“as fast as”); when; while
  • ash – the part left after something burns
  • ask – to question; to say something is wanted (“We ask the teacher questions every day.”)
  • assist – to help
  • astronaut – a person who travels in space
  • astronomy – the scientific study of stars and the universe
  • asylum – political protection given by a government to a person from another country
  • at – in or near (“at the edge”); where (“look at”); when (“at noon”)
  • atmosphere –the gases surrounding any star or planet
  • attach – to tie together; to connect
  • attack – a violent attempt to damage, injure or kill; to start a fight
  • attempt – to work toward something; to try; to make an effort
  • attend – to be present at
  • automobile – a vehicle with wheels used to carry people; a car
  • autumn – the time of the year between summer and winter
  • average – something (a number) representing the middle; common; normal
  • avoid – to stay away from
  • awake – not sleeping
  • award – an honor or prize for an act or service
  • away – not near

B

  • baby – a newly born creature
  • back – the part behind the front; ad. the other way from forward
  • bad – wrong; acting against the law; not good
  • balance – to make two sides or forces equal
  • ball – something round
  • balloon – a device of strong, light material that rises when filled with gas lighter than air
  • ballot – a piece of paper used for voting
  • ban – to not permit; to stop; an official restriction
  • bank – an organization that keeps and lends money
  • bar – to prevent or block
  • barrier – anything that blocks or makes an action difficult
  • base – a military center; v. to establish as a fact (“Her research was based on experiments.”)

    VOA Wordbook Vocabulary Lesson 3 Review Quiz.

    I studied thoroughly all vocabulary words. A very good exercise of daily used words. In this video I have learnt two new words, and they are the ” astronaut, astronomy”.
    I got 100% in the quiz.

    I studied all vocabulary words and understood it’s meaning. It is very good exercise of daily used words. I practiced pronunciation few times and translate all words.
    For the quiz, I got 100% correct.
