3.16.1: Year 3 American English Lessons with Maestro Sersea

Welcome to Vocabulary Year 3 of American English Lessons with Maestro Sersea. In this lesson we will study American English vocabulary compliments of the VOA Wordbook, a dictionary of over 1,500 highly-used words.  Please focus and do your best so that you can learn and improve your vocabulary, which will help your comprehension and communication skills. Don’t forget to use the comments section below to share your thoughts and what you’ve learned today.

Part 1 Directions:  Listen to the audio and read along the vocabulary words and definitions 2-3 times.  If needed, use the translation feature to translate the vocabulary words and definitions in your primary language.

  • finish – to complete; to end
  • fire – to shoot a gun; the heat and light produced by something burning
  • fireworks – rockets producing bright fire in the sky, used in holiday celebrations
  • firm – not easily moved or changed (“She is firm in her opinion.”)
  • first – coming before all others
  • fish – a creature that lives and can breathe in water
  • fit – to be of the correct size or shape (“These shoes fit my feet.”)
  • fix – to make good or right again
  • flag – a piece of colored cloth used to represent a nation, government or organization
  • flat – smooth; having no high places
  • flee – to run away from
  • float – to be on water without sinking; to move or be moved gently on water or through air
  • flood – to cover with water; the movement of water out of a river, lake or ocean onto land
  • floor – the bottom part of a room for walking on (“The book fell to the floor.”); the level of a building (“The fire was on the first floor.”)
  • flow – to move like a liquid
  • flower – the colored part of plants that carry seeds
  • fluid – any substance that can flow, such as a liquid
  • fly – to move through the air with wings, like a bird or airplane; to travel in an airplane or flying vehicle
  • fog – a mass of wet air that is difficult to see through; a cloud close to the ground
  • follow – to come or go after; to accept the rule or power of; to obey
  • food – that which is taken in by all living things for energy, strength and growth
  • fool –to make someone believe something that is not true; to trick; a person who is tricked easily
  • foot –the bottom part of the leg; the part of the body that touches the ground when a person or animal walks
  • for – because of (“He is famous for his work.”); in exchange (“Give me one dollar for the book.”); through space or time (“They travelled for one hour.”); representative of (“I speak for all people.”); to be employed by (“She works for a computer company.”)
  • force – to make someone do something or make something happen by using power; power, strength; strength used against a person or object; military power of a nation; a military group
  • foreign – of, about or from another nation; not from one’s own place or country
  • forest – a place of many trees
  • forget – to not remember
  • forgive – to pardon; to excuse; to remove guilt
  • form – to make; to start; to shape (“They formed a swim team.”); a kind (“Swimming is a form of exercise.”)
  • former – earlier in time; not now

    I read the vocabulary list above but there is no test for this lesson and other lessons before. I prepared my book note and my pencil but there is no any quiz.

    I went through the vocabulary lesson.If we would like to improve our English,one thing we can do is to build up our vocabulary.In order to do this we have to practice a lot.the lessons sent by you are really very helpful. We did get the quiz test since long.

    The quiz test did not receive since long.
