Lesson 3.34.2: year 3
American Story, ” The Last Leaf” Written by O.Henry.
it is a heart touching story that made me very sad. The main characters of the story are Sue, Johnsy and Behrman, though the doctor appears several times in the story, yet he is only secondary character and does not affect the development of the plot.
The story begins with Johnsy and Sue, two young artists and friends living together in a small flat. Johnsy fell ill in the month of November, the doctor diagnosed that she is suffering from pneumonia. her friend sue is really worried and try to cheer her up so she would recover soon, but Johnsy has given up hope of survival. She believes that when the ivy vine on the wall outside her window lose all its Leaves, she would die. However, her neighbor Behrman, an artist ticks her by painting a leaf on the wall and this gives her hope to live and gradually recover from her illness. later sue informed her that Behrman has died of pneumonia, while being out in the cold and wet weather, he is the one who has painted the last Leafe to give Johnsy hope of survival and sacrifices his own life in the process.
” there is no change with sacrifice.”
